Gourmet for Baby

Call me silly but I have always found that Gerber puréed bananas have always tasted very good to me. Not to mention the apples, pears, and squash are also high up there but there is something quite special about making your own little baby their own food fresh from product at the local market.

When my daughter was born, I could not wait until I was able to make her food. My mother-in-law gave her (and my son) their first bites of rice cereal followed by my puréed homemade carrots, apples, pears, apricots, blueberries, and all the root vegetables.

Of course, I didn't come up with these receipts myself. Luckily, I received several books at my baby showers of how to make baby food also how to make it in bulk. Annabel Karmel's baby food books came in handy then and now.

My son is now getting to reap the benefits of homemade puréed fruits and vegetables. I do not make them everyday, although I could, but you can make them in batches and freeze them in either ice cube trays or trays specifically designed for freezing baby food.

One favorite recipe:
Apple, Pear, Apricot and Vanilla Purée

1 large apple, peeled, cored, and chopped
1 large pear, peeled, cores, and chopped
3 ounces dried apricots, unsulfured, chopped
1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
3 T apple juice, unsweetened
2 T water

Put the all ingredients in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil and then let simmer until all is tender. Remove from heat source and allow to cool. Purée to preferred consistency. Serve or freeze.

I've found that when they are eating more textured foods, you can omit the puréeing and lightly mash with a fork and scoop vanilla yogurt on top. Or for adults dessert, don't mash at all and top with ice cream. Just some suggestions.
